It's like this weird thing that writers are doing now, where they feel if they write the characters in accent that it's making them a caricature of a culture. Wood went off about that too. He refused to use the southern vernacular and have her say "shugah" and stuff.

On Wade and Rogue, I don't think I mind. Some people say it was telegraphed. I just reread this whole run recently (and recommend SDA does it) but I didn't see it coming. That being said it's a weird thing to set up right as you leave the book. You'd think he'd want to explore the relationship instead of just creating it and leaving.

This was my first issue of Duggan's UA and I'm glad it was my first.

Rogue making her verbal stand, choosing to run away from Weapon One and giving Charlie proper send off has to be one of the best X-writing in the last few years. So sweet and hard at the same time.

And to top it of, Duggan had her maintain her character and try to fix her mess by kissing Wade and absorbing his pain and injuries.... WOW. I'm in awe.

Her standing up to, or defying Steve has been the MO of the book since Attack on Pleasant Hill ended and he became douchey.

I loved last issue. The life goes on kind of farewell.

It convinced me that Duggan has to write X-Men. The way he waves X-concepts into work leaves me dazzled with feelings.

The Cable stuff was great. Loved Synapse hiding from Hound, running into Stryfe, and saying things like "mutants have it way worse". Cable saying she would've been a great student of Charles Xavier was also choice.

so everyone's praises got me to give this a shot and I'm not disappointed but I'm not amazed either. I really love the way Duggan handles characters I already appreciate (Rogue obvz, Cable, Deadpool) but I'm pretty unimpressed with the characters I didn't know/didn't care about before reading it. I guess I didn't HATE anyone I wasn't supposed to hate? The villains weren't that impressive. Like I get RS + Xavier's brain is supposed to be a major threat but like. Ultimately his master plan consisted in brainwashing a bunch of second rate Avengers and make them fight each other? That was it? The culmination of 5+ years of stories and it was just a rehash of what Remender did in issue #3 or #4 of the first volume? Mmkay.
Was it Duggan's idea to make Rogue and Johnny an item? Because ugh. Also in the grand scheme of things it didn't feel like they accomplished much? LIke they're supposed to be the UNITY team consecrating the realization of Xavier's dream. DOn't get me wrong it's nice that they ended up getting along with each other (although lots of them barely interacted with each other...) but like that's what every team does since ANAD, they start out hating each other's guts and then grow into a family. I feel like I should expect a little.... more.

It was mostly just the least bad book in a sea of bad books. And like you said, he did right by the X-Characters and mission. The mutant one off issues looking for the brain come to mind. Almost like a playful Amazing X-Men in disguise between Unity arcs.
