Comic Book Révolution > The Underdogs > The Wicked + The Divine

Gods as pop stars, pop stars as gods.

That is just one of the ideas that's explored in The Wicked + The Divine, a buzz-heavy new comic from Image shaping up to be one of the big books of the summer.

It hails from writer Kieron Gillen and artist Jamie McKelvie, a British comics team who are fan favorites for their critically acclaimed Young Avengers Marvel comic.

This time, Gillen and McKelvie go deeper into pop culture exploration with the concept of 12 gods who, every 90 years, incarnate pop figures -- artists, singers, innovators -- of their day. In the 21st century, they happen to be pop stars of the David Bowie, Lady Gaga and Adele variety. Then, after two years, they die.

Not impressed with that preview.

Posted by: teddicus May 24 2014, 10:16 PM
The dialogue reminds me of Archer. I don't even know why.

Not terribly interested. I'd rather more Phonogram but I respect Gillen and McKelvie for going for something new.

Posters if you want 'em! If they're doing these for each cover I think I'll wait and see what's next. I missed the first two and these ones I'm not AS in love with, so it'll depend on who's on the covers of 4 and 5.

I don't get it, but I really want to.

Can some kind soul explain it better?

Posted by: Time Like Lightning May 30 2014, 08:12 PM
The premise? Basically every ninety years, various gods and goddesses from various pantheons are given human form. But they only get a limited amount of time to live (we've not yet been told why/how they die and how much time they have from learning of their divinity). Most of them use that time to become celebrities and garner a cult following. This series, I believe, is covering a modern incarnation.

I am legitimately interested in this comic after reading this preview. I have always had an affinity for a cast of cooky individuals chewing the scenery. Probably why I like Quentin Tarantino films, Grant Morrison comics, Brian K. Vaughan comics, and, of course, Warren Ellis comics.

OMG, why did no one tell me to correct that misspelling. I feel like such a tool.

Not sure how I feel nor how I'm supposed to feel about this comic yet.

Interesting enough concept. Will read #2 for sure.

I don't know how, but at some point the art of mckelvie really started to annoy me.
his characters look like spoiled, blase, bored teens.
I mean, I feel like punching them in the face, each one of them.

And suffer from same-face syndrome. Seen one, seen them all.

I WOULD like to see a different artist on this series. Just realized that.

I find him boring, though his drawings are pretty. As long as we're being picky, I find it odd how he chooses to crop some things out most of the time.

It feels like some of those modern limited flash based cartoons. Like he could do so much better if he was less assembly chain. If that makes any sense.

His work does look mass-produced. He's his own style at this point so that you always know it's Mckelvey, but the flip-side to that is that you always know it's McKelvey and you know that all the characters in the page you're looking at look exactly like different characters in his other books.

But that's a small gripe.

I'm enjoying the series well enough so far.

My favorite rapper's analogue made his character known in today's issue, #4. I found it pretty funny.

Just fished vol 1. I loved it. Hope the next trade comes soon.

Posted by: Lycaon pictus Jul 26 2015, 04:32 AM
I got the second trade this week, and started last night, and omg

Inanna is modeled after Prince. I hadn't even considered such a thing was possible. I wasn't thinking, "I wonder what this dude will look like" I hadn't even thought!!!!

I love this title, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it.

Bought the first two volumes in a Comixology sale. It's good. Certainly better than Young Avengers.

I love Dio.

Posted by: Supernature Nov 10 2016, 01:32 PM
I wanted to take my mind off the news and read the 4 trades.

Inanna was a fave. Love Baal and Morrigan too. Sakhmet is amusing.
Kind of wish we'd seen more of Tara.

Wonder where things will go with Ananke out of the way...

Can I say Persephone is a lil depressed? It looks like she's just going through motions.

That last page is a good cliffhanger.

Big fan of Kieron Gillen. So I have to ask, is this worth purchasing?

I've enjoyed the few previews I've read, but I need to know if it's worth committing to.

Posted by: Satan Dec 8 2016, 03:54 PM
Idk what to tell you. It's good, but not wow good for me. I like the mythology of it.

wicdic 1831 is the best single thing this series produced as far as I am concerned.

Try out the first trade and see if you like it.

Right-o! Thanks.

I took the https://www.qzzr.com/c/quiz/409603/which-god-from-the-wicked-the-divine-are-you and got Baal. I'm surprised but content with the result.

Me too, and I'm real confused?

I think me choosing lightning as an aesthetic might have scored me Baal.

Posted by: Satan Sep 7 2017, 09:36 AM
This issue was brutal.

And Dio reminds me so much of me with dealing his crushes. And sleep deprivation. And making ppl happy. But I'm no coffee ho.

Is it really that surprising what Woden did? Nah.

Woden bathed all in green while Sakhmet bathed in red.

Will next issue be Baal vs Sakhmet? Laura vs Sakhmet?

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE CHRISTMAS ANNUAL #1

STORY: KIERON GILLEN
ART: CARLA SPEED MCNEIL, CHYNNA CLUGSTON FLORES, EMMA VIECELI, KRIS ANKA, MATT WILSON, RACHAEL STOTT
COVER: JAMIE MCKELVIE, MATT WILSON
VARIANT COVER: KRIS ANKA

DECEMBER 13 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99

JAMIE said “It’s a shame we never saw any of the gods’ early funtimes,” and KIERON said “Yeah,” and then they looked at each other, and then called all their talented friends to do a Christmas album of (mostly) fan service! Inanna and Baal getting it on! Lucifer and Sakhmet getting it on! Dionysus giving Baphomet a lift in a crappy car! And more! This one has it all.

After Imperial Phase, something a little more fun. Will be almost certainly collected in the specials trade.

Okay, I'm down for it. Dion giving Baph a lift is going to be stupendous. wink.gif

Solicit make the end of Imperial Phase sound very ominous. I want it now!!!!!

Posted by: Satan Oct 12 2017, 11:32 AM
Poor Dio, optimist till the brain dead end. sad.gif((

Sakhmet asking Laura for honesty while laying triggered my feelings. At least Laura was brutally honest about not liking herself. And Cass asked her all the right questions that needed to be asked, but Laura as always deflects.

What was in the room? What did Daft Punk fuckboy do? It's gonna be hard waiting for the conclusion.

Posted by: Satan Nov 25 2017, 11:26 AM
Fuckboy's identity was like okay, but I prefer to Woden stay faceless. But it fits with patriarchy killing the young for the sake of society or whatever bullshit.

The end was also okay, but I'm more interested in whether Ananke is revived in Minerva, and that's what the big Woden machine was supposed to do?

Posted by: Satan Dec 13 2017, 10:56 AM
I didn't expect full frontal nudity, hence my shock at reading Christmas special.

Baal/Inanna was the sexiest, dug how Sakhmet was serving realness when she dumped Luci since I didn't expect it from her to use moral compass, Tara vignette was the most tragic and Luci/Amaterasu was kinda friendship dealbreaker.

This special did me good.
