Okay, so I decided to start reading Michael Turner's first creator-owned series, Fathom. I'll use this thread to review each issue of the series and it's spin-offs.

Meet a woman named Aspen Matthews...

Young, beautiful, marine biologist with a strange passion for the sea.

For Aspen, she can only imagine what lies deep inside of the ocean.....and what secrets it holds.

FATHOM VOL 1 #1
Written by Bill O'Neil, Michael Turner
Art by Michael Turner, Joe Weems

QUOTE

There are two worlds. The one we know, and the one below. Aspen Matthews was a marine biologist who, in a failed experiment, discovered that she is actually a water nymph, able to live and thrive beneath the water.

It starts off with flashback like scenes of young Aspen being eleven years old when she was found on a ship called "Paradise" she was lost & memory-less, but then she is adopted by Captain Matthews. The flashback switches to a mystery dude who narrates how the military tried cover up the sudden arrive of Paradise which disappeared, presumed lost, for ten years. I assume he's the bad guy because he has bad guy narration box colors. There's another switch to a different guy who looks like a water version of the silver surfer. He seems to be Aspen's protector.

Then in the present day, Aspen is swimming in a local pool, reflecting on how much she loves to be in the water *hint, hint* She comes up for air and is greeted by a friend who's there to take her to the airport. Aspen is excited because she got a job with the DMD inc. In Honolulu, Hawaii to help research underwater habitat which is 1200 feet below sea level.

Aspen arrives at the airport, she meets her ex-boyfriend Jack Gregory who is going to be a part of her team. Jack is a stereotypical, 90's ex-boyfriend type (i.e MASSIVE JERK), and Aspen hates him (Four for you, Aspen Matthews). While jack is enjoying the news of the team up, he to get nice and cozy with Aspen en route ( via small sub) to the DMD Research Center.

Now that they made it to the Deep Marine Discovery where they're going to spend the next ninety days researching the underwater habitat, they discover that they were brought to the underwater center to help investigate a mysterious vessel that the DMD built itself around. Aspen is then shown to a room, where she is told a mysterious man/creature connected to the vessel, who attacked a military research center with his friends and killed five soldiers before turning himself in. The man now sleeps in a water-filled tube that keeps him alive. Oh, and it's the bad guy from the flashback. Uh oh.

Meanwhile, the Navy is chasing lights on the water that may or may not be friendly ( they arent). The Navy sends out pilots to investigate, but two of the pilots are shot down and killed. One of the remaining pilots shoots a torpedo at the lights but obviously the torpedo can't lock-on to fucking lights (seriously, dude where is your mind at??) and instead finds its way to the underwater DMD facility. ooops.

End Issue #1

I like Aspen so far, her disgust at her ex-boyfriend is utterly delightful. I hope she keeps it up. #noscrubsforaspen

There's a guy introduced who reminds me of Ian Nottingham so I obviously love him already. Hopefully he gets better treatment than Ian did.

The bad guy is the worst. He's a straight Britta and both of his attempts to kidnap Aspen have failed terribly. It's pretty obvious that him turning himself in is another attempt to get at Aspen, but it's so horribly convoluted that it's destined to fail.

The dialogue is not overly cheesy, but could use improvements. However, since it is from the late 90's I'll just let it slide this time. I miss Michael Turner's art, but his work here doesn't seem to be as good as his witchblade stuff. http://i.imgur.com/H45WCPv.gif

All in all, I give this issue a 7/10.

Stay tuned for issue 2 & 3!

One thing that makes me sad is that in better days of comic book market (which was 1999-2002, at least in Poland), it was one of the few things you could get in Poland. I never liked this shit, as I always treated it as a softcore porn. And since I have internet, I don't need it anymore.

No offense to the fans, but really, it's not really good or anything......
