I wasn't aware there was a Native Lives Matter movement. I feel like I should've, my mom's from South Dakota and she'd always tell my sister and I about horrific injustices that were commonplace for her native friends. When she was in college she witnessed several FBI officers beating a boy to death from her apartment window. When she screamed for them to stop they started going door to door looking for her so she turned off all her lights and hid in her closet. Fucked up.

Yeah, there's really no reason that prostitution should still be illegal.

There's not much reason for most consentual crimes to be illegal.

It's huge in Canada. Lots of "disappeared" native women, like in Juarez down south.

I know the Canadian government also liked to seize native children and place them with white families. Pretty overt cultural cleansing.

Yes, it's the great shame here. Canada's genocide. It's one of the constant topics at the law school.

But, Canadians are supposedly so incredibly nice!

That is a myth. Not saying people here aren't nice but we have huge black eyes in our history. The treatment of the First Nations people here in the past and even now is really horrible. They were essentially wiped out and their culture destroyed. Linguists are scrambling to meet with and record elders from different groups before they die because many First Nations languages are functionally extinct due to the genocide in the past. Sadly some have died before they could complete their work.

A group of prominent protesters in Black Lives Matter has released a set of policy reforms to address police violence. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/au...s?CMP=edit_2221
This could be the start of BLM growing from a grass roots activist movement, to one organized enough to make real political change.

Some updates:

Good News
I don't follow the Hugo Awards, so I heard about this whole thing after the fact. Apparently, there's a contingent of sci-fi novel fans who think women/minorities/lgbt stories and authors have been too prominent in the genre lately (wtf?) and pushing out white, male, conservative authors and stories. They formed some kind of blood covenant called Sad Puppies and also Rabid Puppies and stuffed the ballots for the Hugo awards with their candidates. Twitter says this was accomplished by recruiting gamergate people--which doesn't surprise me given all the SJW rhetoric. Long story short, rather than award any Puppy candidates a Hugo, all categories with only Puppy candidates were deemed No Award, and only non-Puppy candidates won in mixed ballots.

Neutral News
It's the 10th anniversary of Katrina. There's entirely too much to say about that, but I think it's worth mentioning.

Good news?
New Orleans is going to remove their Confederate monuments. ...or they voted to do so. The governor (who is one of the many running for the GOP Presidential nomination) has vowed to stop it.

Good News
The Fairfax, VA cop who shot and killed unarmed John Geer has been charged with murder. It's the first time in that PD's history that criminal charges have been brought against an officer as a rsult of an on-duty shooting.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/a...ing-/#pq=n9Onvl

Bad News
A NJ Grand Jury decided the officers who murdered Jerame Reid didn't even have to go to trial. For those who don't know, he didn't stop completely at a stop sign, and was told to get out of his car for it. For some reason, one of the cops got nervous while he was getting out of the car and shot at him. The shot missed, but when the other cop heard it, he reflexively fired 7 shots, killing Reid. Please note that the cop who shot 7 times is currently being sued for rape. Also note that the family of the man they murdered won a previous lawsuit against the state of NJ for police brutality. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/08/21/1...know-no-charges

Bunch of other stuff
A jury could not reach a decision in the death of Jonathan Ferrell, and a mistrial has been declared. 14 police officers took down a one-legged homeless man. Someone previously reported he was "threatening people with sticks". Those sticks were crutches. This all happened outside the Twitter HQ, where no one could be bothered to help this man. There are plenty of pictures though. Just google

Good news
Speaking of google, they finally delisted 8chan from their search results due to the well-known fact that they host child porn/almost child-porn and have for a while. Finally.

Great News!

Remember how the Justice Department exposed that Ferguson was farming its residents for revenue in the form of excessive fines for minor traffic violations? Remember how Ferguson cops did crazy things like issue 8 tickets per stop, and more traffic violations than the entire population of the city? Remember how people would lose their licenses and/or wind up in jail because they couldn't pay these predatory fines?

Well, no more!

The new judge in charge (who replaced the disgraced old one who was tossed out last year) is granting amnesty for all those arrest warrants, and other nonsense.

QUOTE
The changes, ordered by Judge Donald McCullin, who was appointed as Ferguson’s municipal judge in June, called for withdrawing all municipal warrants issued before Dec. 31, 2014. That should amount to nearly 10,000 warrants, the city said. It does not apply to state charges for more serious crimes.

Defendants will get new court dates, according to the order, and may be put on installment plans to pay off their fines or ordered to perform community service instead. Some indigent individuals could have their fines commuted, according to the order.

Defendants who continually fail to show up for court may have new arrest warrants issued, the order said, or they may get a setoff on their tax returns. People whose licenses were suspended solely because they failed to appear in court or pay a fine will have their licenses reinstated pending the disposition of their cases, the order said.

Ferguson, with about 21,000 residents, had already stopped assessing additional fees for people who failed to appear in court.

And in other news, anyone on Twitter should check out @jesshopp's timeline. There is a reckoning happening right now.
