I tried to post on the old Harry's for 5 minutes before I realized what was going on.

Now as I was trying to say, please stay safe AF! I hope it's over by now, but if not stay inside and away from windows!

Also wanted to say there's another Dem debate tonight. This time there's evidence it's am ambush debate, because MSNBC literally threw this whole thing together in a week

Posted by: Beezzi Feb 4 2016, 04:51 PM
@AF: That's terrible. Stay safe.

after 10 hours the crap is finally resolved and we were able to come home. When SWAT showed up we left to get an early lunch, and then shots were fired and everything was shut down.

Hate to be a complete idiot and share personal information on the web but here's the story http://wsav.com/2016/02/04/shots-fired-georgetown-no-injuries/

Lol one of the photos in the slideshow was actually taken through my balcony and you can see my Orlando City SC flag hanging. And my wife and I's cars are in some of the pictures.

So dumb.

At least there were no injuries.

I don't smoke either. But all my out of state friends always want to buy it or pot brownies because it's legal.

Also it mandatory that we wear as many pouches as possible. That going to be a deal breaker LP?

Posted by: Lycaon pictus Feb 4 2016, 10:40 PM
Dunno why, but I'm down with pouches

That's one of the reasons I'm glad DisMarvel isn't making the X-Movies.

OK then.

I'm in love with the video. The song is good too but I didn't know it was the lead single on her new album?

Posted by: Supernature Feb 6 2016, 02:57 PM
Yes the video is amazing. The song has no hook, and some of those #hastagable lyrics are cringe worthy imo.

I'm assuming it's her lead single. Or a buzz single. She performing at the SB tomorrow. She's probably got a new album coming.

Very disappointing. 3/5

Really? It sounds so white.

That music video is like watching Ralph Bakshi's Coonskin again. I'm not sure how using offensive black stereotypes, caricatures, and racism conveys any sort of positive message or sociopolitical commentary.

Posted by: Fod_2K16 Feb 6 2016, 11:41 PM
So came across this on Youtube.

Posted by: AgentFeliX Feb 7 2016, 02:06 AM
*disclaimer: i'm wasted*

The new Beyonce song is meh.

easily ranks behind most of her other singles in catchiness.

Posted by: Fod_2K16 Feb 7 2016, 10:55 AM
It reminds me of Madonna's "I'm Madonna, Bitch."

Trying too hard at playing up to a perceived "black genre" or "black cultural style" and failing miserably because the end product is so laughably white and misses the mark at hard hitting commentary on real black culture.

All Beyonce did in her video was exploit disasters that affected POC and negative stereotypes of POC and claims they are empowering.

I understand the concept of trying to own those stereotypes, but that didn't exactly work in the previous post I mentioned, wherein I brought up the movie "Coonskin."

Oh, well, what do I know.

Ok, so this is a lot like when Actual American Hero Bree Newsome ascended that flag pole like a Goddess and removed the SC Confederate flag, and some of y'all were like, "meh". Or worse, "she's just doing it for attention." Meanwhile, her heroism and her message were clear as a fucking bell to the rest of us.

I don't really go in for chart music like that, and I am in no way part of the hive.
I like a handful of Beyonce songs, probably the most popular ones, and I think she's a good pop star. This song is not one of her best. Agree with Supes, there is no real hook. Can't really dance to it.

But the Formation video is a Revelation.

Briefly,

1. Beyonce is never political. She is a mainstream pop act, and gives cursory nods to things like 'feminism' or body autonomy on her best day. This video is blatantly political, and stands out for that reason.

2. The Illuminati clap back

3. Natural hair pride, "I like my baby hair with baby hair afros" is a direct response to media gadflys and twitterbirds who crticized that baby's hair.

3.5 The WEALTH of black hair in this video! Natural hair, braids, weaves, perms, processed, all of it textured and beautiful!

4. Blue looking fierce as fuck, like the Diamond Princess she is, playing with those other two natural hair babies

5. Heavily steeped in southern culture--nods to Majorette culture (okay ladies now let's get in formation, prove to me you got coordination, slay trick or you get eliminated) Southern Gothic motifs, reclaiming the Plantation, images of the Black Church, fuckin NOLA everywhere, every god damn where, dressed like 19th century Creoles, the portraits in the mansion are of black people

6. BIG FREEDIA THE QUEEN DIVA

7. Black queers slaying in the beauty shop, men peter panning, voice overs from the Alpha and Omega of NOLA Bounce music. As much as Formation is a Black Anthem, it is an anthem for Black Femmes. Just look at the black queer imagery just dripping from this video! Do you know about the richness of that history?

8. Little black boy in a hoodie dancing in front of a line of cops in riot gear

8.5 The cops put their hands up. I ascend to a higher plane of being.

9. The only white people in the video are those cops.

10. Remember, for all her cult of personality, Beyonce is a mainstream pop act. For her to so blatantly eschew white aesthetic norms, to make a song just for US is laudable in and of itself. Of course you don't understand it! It's not for you.

11. There has never been a more full-throated positive affirmation of Blackness than "I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils" since the original Black is Beautiful in the 60's. NEVER. IT IS EVERYTHING.

12. Bitch, I have hot sauce in my bag. My grandparents always carry a bottle in the car whenever they travel. IT'S LIKE SHE TAPPED INTO THE HEART OF EVERYTHING THAT EVER WAS OR WILL BE.

13. It's also a personal statement, like "No. I didn't get my street cred from Jay. I got it from the damn 9th Ward and Houston, cuz that's where my people come from." (My Daddy Alabama, Mama Louisianna) Though Jay clearly has been coaching her on her raps.

14. Staying true to your roots and proclaiming where your people come from is very Black

15. So is Red Lobster. I never understood that one, honestly.

16. Black man riding a horse down the street. WE were some of the first cowboys in the American west. The Lone Ranger is based off a Black lawman.

17. The newspaper with the picture of MLK, and the headline "More than a Dreamer" clearly a reference to the #ReclaimMLK movement, which aims to replace the sanitized, commodified, white-washed version of his message with the truth of his radicalism.

18. BEYONCE USING HER OWN BODY TO DROWN THE SYMBOLIC CORPSE OF THE OPPRESSOR IN THE FLOODWATERS OF KATRINA, A DISASTER CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE FROM THE POWERS THAT BE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE DISENFRANCHISED.

19. STOP SHOOTING US

20. Formation is speaking a language you don't understand. It's visual language is one you can not comprehend. It's not for you. The fact that you think anything about this is negative says volumes. There are no negative stereotypes anywhere in the video! Are afros negative? Baby hair? Jackson Five nostrils? Hot sauce, bitch? Is hot sauce a negative stereotype the black community should overcome??? Sometimes, you don't have to give an opinion. Sometimes you should recognize that your opinion is not informed, or needed in this situation. Not everything is about you.

Sports culture is just geek culture for people who do sports

Fantasy football is just D&D with football players

Dressing up in a team jersey is the same as cosplay

Nerd culture makes money...sports culture makes money

Conventions like SDCC, NYCC, WonderCon are the equivalent of NFL/NBA/MLB/FIFA games.

Though SDCC is more akin to the SB.

Especially because all the comic movies try to get ad time during the SB

Geeks trashing on sports is the same level of close mindedness that is used by jocks trashing on anime/comics/video game ect.

If we embrace an open view of the world we come to one conclusion: fandoms are fandoms...whether it be sports, comics, cars, politics, movies, music ect

As I said, blatant negative racial stereotypes that are not constructive, nor useful. Beyonce is just doing it for attention. Sometimes you need to realize your opinion isn't the end all be all, and others are entitled to their own opinions.

Beyonce doesn't say much of consequence in Formation.

Katrina was literally a decade ago.

This barely-there acknowledgement of the problems with policing, while not harmful, doesn't help much either. So half-assed.

Black folks celebrating hot sauce is like white folks celebrating that they wear a lot of camo and like to collect guns...it means nothing.

I like Bey, but if she really wanted to make a statement, she would have. Formation was intentionally light.

Formation was intentionally insubstantial. There was maybe a little bit of risk in acknowledging BLM at all, but as far as political statements go, the song was closer to meaningless than powerful.

It was a standard bootyshake video with a slight pro-black undertone that was closer to reducing blackness to the enjoyment of hot sauce than it was to affirming the beauty of blackness.

I feel like we are making more out of this out of a lack of other options.

There are no mainstream black artists REALLY being political so we take what little victory we can get and trump this trite little song up.

"I take him out to eat when the sex is good." This is our protest song?

Nah. I reject Formation. It can be a song. But not our protest song. We aren't THAT low.

Also, Drunk In Love >>>>>>>>>>>>.

That's what I'm saying. There's a disconnect between the video and the song. Actually there is also a disconnect between parts of the video.

The Katrina and Police brutality parts were good but why are they together with twerking, sexing her man and her and Jay-Z's usual obsession with "getting paper". If you want to be "woke" you shouldn't half-bake it. That makes it too easy to pick it apart / be distracted from the message you were trying to convey...

Fucking terrible.

Corny overplayed and / or shitty songs. Boring performance by Coldplay themselves, and the people they brought to spice things up didn't add that much either. A mess.

Also another opportunity for a Telephone performance wasted.

Putting aside the "new black anthem" aspect of it for now.

Formation is also a personal song of Beyonce's and so, of course, she will reference things in her life growing up black w/ strong ties to nola and texas. As LP highlighted earlier, a lot of the lyrics from the song are about Beyonce and her pride in her roots in addition to a wider acceptance of "southern blackness."

I think what so many people are connecting with is that shared experience of "southern blackness" or even blackness in general. She's unapologetic in how she grew up and she's proclaiming her pride while using her platform as a mainstream pop artists to give other black women a song that celebrates them in ways that mainstream media does not give them the opportunity to.

AND she does this while using purposeful imagery of her on a cop car in the middle of NO to address the injustice of the system. It's a metaphor for the way Black NO residents was neglected and even killed by NOPD and her sitting on top of the car was visually powerful because it’s literally a black woman making the injustice system fall, not as a cheap prop. Why would she cheapen it when the song literally opens with “What happened after New Orleans?”

The video isn't just a bunch of random stuff thrown together to strike up video views. It was all personal to Beyonce and everything was used to convey a message about her feelings on her blackness.

Lady Gaga is doing a pretty good national anthem

she almost looks like DOlly Parton out there

That's what's she said she wanted to strive for. A classic, timeless rendition of the Nation Anthem. She was adamant in interviews that she wasn't going to put her specific "Gaga-ness" on it.

Instead she wanted to sing the song like Whitiney Houston did, since that was Gaga's favorite rendition of the song.

ALso have a Jungle Book Trailer

I've been waiting to hear them speak! Other than the first trailer with Kaa, which gave me chills at the end because I thought ScarJo was just narrating the trailer and didn't knew she was voicing Kaa.

I love this so far, and will be in the theater opening night. Animal based Disney movies are the best Disney movies.

And Idris Elba as Sher Khan? Amazing casting. The Bill Murray voice is jarring, agree, but I'm open to it.

Re:Formation, what Theodore said. "I love my baby hair with baby hair and afros" is both a statement about natural hair pride, and a direct response to all the people who said, "Why is Beyonce's hair always done, but she can't make sure her baby's hair is done?"
"I love my negro nose and Jackson Five nostrils" is a statement that I give equal standing to that cop car scene, and that little boy dancing in front of a line of cops in riot gear. In this world, self-love is radical. Celebration of blackness is always radical in the face of white supremacy. And it matters that it comes from Beyonce because this is a pop star who pretty much wears a blonde weave everywhere, makes fairly safe music, and lives in a gilded palace. I'd expect this from Solange, or Monae, but for Beyonce to say it? It (also) feels like a direct response to critiques about her not being black enough, and not speaking out about The Struggle.

Btw, there is no twerking in this video. There's the usual dancing with Bey, major nods to Majorette culture, and men peter panning, which you wouldn't know about if you don't know NOLA or Bounce.

I would laugh my balls off if during the credits for the Deadpool movie, if they leave out Liefield's name.

"Thanks to Deadpool creators, Fabian Nicieza, Joe Kelly, Ed McGuinness"

Quite frankly all Liefield did was the costume, while Nicieza, Kelly, and McGuinness gave Deadpool the wacky nature and sadness that people love.

I'll never understand why people buy comics on a regular basis that they actively hate. I mean, I get wanting to show support for a title or franchise when it's at a low point to give it a future to reach new heights but my limits aren't very high. If I really, really liked a book that bought it about 6 below mediocre installments in a row before it was cut. Granted when you read a lot for long enough it's hard to even know what good is anymore.

I'm not reading much anymore, and nothing on a monthly schedule (But thanks to Griffin, somewhat tempted to try Silver Surfer again) but I can only put myself through so much misery with comics.

Comixology sales and humble bundles are the only ways to go.

I have the whole runs of Ex Machina, Y: The Last Man, iZombie, The Invisibles, Transmetropolitian, Planetary, Freakangels, Global Frequency, Hellsing, and Petshop of Horrors.

I am currently collecting: Grandville, Saga, Trees, Injection, and the original Vampire Hunter D novels translated from Japanese.

One offs that may interest others: Fun Home, Sandman: The Dream Hunters GN, Supreme: Blue Rose, Anna Mercury, Ignition City, and Pride of Baghdad.

I have others, but they are pretty much assorted Warren Ellis works from Avatar Press that the rest of you would definitely not be interested in.

(I pretty sure at some point she forgot I was a long time X-fan. It's like she thought we were some kinda tiny, downtrodden minority before.)

X-Men has almost always had a super diverse audience. Just look at CBR's X-Board in it's heyday, we were all ladies, glbts, non-caucs or some combo of the 3. I'm pretty sure Brian M was the only regularly contributing SWM back then (he only sucked metaphorical dick).

Avengers was always for the boys club, both in the comic itself and with the audience. That's why the core fanbase is now gnashing it's teeth at forced diversity and manbabying up all corners of the internet. If we ever went through those growing pains it was back in 1975, and coming off a failed book anyway.

Posted by: Kaiolino Feb 9 2016, 05:59 AM
I feel like CBR is (was) an exception to the rule when it came to diversity. Any other X-Men fanbase on the internet always spends its time teeth gnashing about how Cyclops is being mistreated and how all the women are author pets. Except Emma, because she stayed loyal.

Posted by: jarrod Feb 9 2016, 06:11 AM
Oh right, the Rightclops (aka: Shitclops) phenomenon is one that completely bucked the previous trend. But that really dates to the mid/late 00s, and Cyclops himself may as well be an Avenger anyway given he looks/acts/attracts an audience like one.

There were also always insecure fanbabies going back through the years, they were just an angry minority. That's why we originally got X-Factor after all.

And honestly i'm ok with that

Posted by: Beezzi Feb 9 2016, 08:01 AM
And see, all this is what I told her, we've always been a diverse fanbase. Marvel's current 'diversity push' is simply to hide the fact that their other franchises were sloppy brurtwurst fests for decades.

Even before CBR starting hallucinating it was #1 (1995 lol), CFan had a pretty good diverse spread of x-posters/contributers. Heck, the most active x-fan sites (including CFan) were started and run by women like Majorie Liu. (Also one of the first fanbases with a zero tolerance hate speech policy - lately we seem to be losing ground on this one.)

I mean she used ANXM as an example?! A comic that was suppose to launch with 4 middle class white guys and white 1 chick, until an editor stuck both his feet in his mouth?!

I brought up GenX and the New Mutants, but she doesn't read the 'old stuff'. She loves nuYana though. *sigh*

I'm regretting my decision not to use the dessert fork so much now...it's totally put a bee in my comic bonnet.

Posted by: jarrod Feb 9 2016, 08:43 AM
Beezi, you just need to carry that fork on you for next time. Aim for an artery.

I only lurked then but I remember Cfan being pretty diverse back in the day. Also Alvaro's Comicboards. And back when I was a kid in the 90s pretty every non-SWM I met who was into comics was also super invested in the X-Books it seemed like. The more recent swing back is purely a result of how editors and writers have handled the titles since the mid/late 00s I believe, and probably also Marvel's general handling of the franchise at large.

Posted by: Beezzi Feb 9 2016, 09:26 AM
I have a funny feeling her acidic demon blood would've eaten through the table if I did poke her.

Wow...the Alvaro's is a blast from the past. I remember that site being where the Spidey fans hung out. I think they had a very vocal set of anti-clone posters.

*Google*

Hey, their X-board is still up and running! Warms the heart. Mmm...seem cranky as ever. biggrin.gif

I've been thinking of adding a community list of past active x-fans to the ol'/dead fansites portion of the the archive. If only for nostalgia sake and to see how the communities make-up has changed over the years.

Well, to be fair, my favorite comic book character is a trans* and a native Brazilian.

Had to create a separate X-Men movie thread for people who actually like them on CBR because apparantly the Reich is completely okay with people who openly say in the discussion thread they only post there to wach the trainwrecks and to annoy fans and have no intention to actually watch the movie.

X-Men has almost always had a super diverse audience. Just look at CBR's X-Board in it's heyday, we were all ladies, glbts, non-caucs or some combo of the 3. I'm pretty sure Brian M was the only regularly contributing SWM back then (he only sucked metaphorical dick).
.

There were actually about 3 SWM back in the day: Brian M, Hakael and Me

Ryan Sook!!! Pasqual Ferry!!! I need their interiors.

Psylocke looks smashing. Better than Archangel's concubine way before in RiRem's book.

Posted by: jarrod Feb 10 2016, 01:43 PM
Sook on Uncanny would be a dream. Even if only alternating.

Ferry's great too and sadly someone who oddly never managed a regular X-Gig. I'd take either in a hearbeat over the Ramos/Land/Bagley trifecta.

Posted by: Satan Feb 10 2016, 01:48 PM
I thought it was the Hulk on Pasqual's cover. But yeah, he never premiered to a full gig. Altho he did a Gazer back-up for Milligan's run. Twas too short and too sweet.

I'm sick of this nu editorial's flawed management. There are so many underused talented artists laying around for the picking and they go for Land/Bagley/Ramos?! Taste is severely lacking.

Urgh. Every time I read updates for Alien: Covenant I become geometrically more disappointed and disinterested in the final product.

I liked Prometheus because I wanted to learn more about the Space Jokeys/Engineers. David 8 and Dr. Shaw finding out more about them was infinitely more interesting, despite Noomi Rapace's Dr. Shaw being a bland character, than Fox putting out another Zerg Rush vs Space Marines and slapping the "Alien" franchise logo on the movie.

Even Ridley Scott stated in several interviews he was done making films about the Aliens, he refers to them as "dragons." Scott said in an interview he found idea of making another Alien movie featuring "...those damn dragons..." as boring and unappealing.

Now, they have that asshole from those Appatow and James Franco Movies starring as a cast member.

I forgot which thread you have to view to know the reason I made that avatar.

I was talking about there being, I don't know, like 5 Mrs. Summers, one of which I realized was technically Janet van Dyne Pym Summers, and I commented the fact that name and character exists is a walking joke.

Like, authors must think of the Wasp as some kind of disposable waifu for their asshole Aryan Avengers characters.

Like, did Pym and Janet ever officially divorce? Because otherwise she's practicing bigamy by being married to both Pym and Havok. Like WTF?!

There is a character in the Marvel Comic Universe married to both a Pym and Summers. The Wasp needs to be put down indefinitely.

For the record the other Mrs. Summers are: Madelyne Pryor Summers, Jean Grey-Summers, and Lorna Dane Summers.

Emma never married Slim, so she dodged that bullet.

Still though. Marvel uses this plot point often enough, they should be able to get it right. There were no legally binding documents to pair them together but Havok and the Wasp had 8(?) years of being together that was just forgotten at the drop of a hat in Axis.

It's like when Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix happens, and Scott and Jean come back and are immediately in tune with everything that's going on in the present. YOU'VE BEEN GONE A DECADE. I sure as shit can't remember the entire status quo of my life 10 years ago, let alone remember recent events if I were to show up on a specific day.

I didn't read it but I know Remender pulled the same shit with Cap being trapped in Dimension Z for a decade.

/rant

Point being, Wasp shouldn't have been able to just walk away from Alex after him being a mind controlled shit for a week, when they have 8+ years of history. Even if they have no official marriage in this present time.

I had the same wacom teething problems at the start.

If it's the "feel" of the pen that's getting to you, try to change the nip sensitivity a bit - I just couldn't get comfortable till I'd mucked around with the settings. Found those totally by accident, felt like an idiot for not doing it on day one - the difference it makes is huge.

Mostly though it just takes time to get use to it.

At a Cabin in North Georgia hiking, drinking, taking some odd pictures and such. Played some Catan last night, air hockey and billiards today. Loving it. When we get a little drunker we're gonna get in the hot tub (it's like upper 20's).

I'd post links individually but too lazy/drunk.

The mid-season premiere of Walking Dead was one of the best episodes of the show, ever. Top 10 definitely. Maybe Top 5.

Do those "watch a show's premier" parties really add to the overall enjoyment to a show?

Actually curious.

Posted by: Lycaon pictus Feb 15 2016, 08:37 AM
It wasn't the zombies.

The episode was like the anti-GoT. Right when things were at their worst, goodness prevailed, people rallied, and it was immensely satisfying to see a narrative actually reward the heroic efforts of the characters you care about.

SPOILERS:
that scene with Daryl in the first 5 minutes got the first standing ovation. I know lots of people think he's hot, I'm not personally the biggest fan because I want so desperately to bathe him...until this episode. That was awesome. It was amazing. I forgot he even had that rocket launcher!!! HUGE upgrade from the crossbow. It was beautiful.

And so unexpected! Because I was certaian Abraham was done for. (still kinda am)

And then the thing with Glenn? Omg, my emotions. At first I thought he was about to watch Maggie die, and I was all, "Please don't split them up on Valentine's Day!" Then he heroically drew all the zombies to him to save her--and that one girl-- and Maggie tried to help him, but there were no bullets in her gun and i was like "omg, nooooo!" And someone in the group was like, "yeah there's no way he can get out of it this time" And I was SO CERTAIN I was about to see him die, after my emotions were trampled from the first half of the season...

AND THEN THE CAVALRY ARRIVED AND SAVED THE DAMN DAY! It was amazing! Mullet guy was fighting, the whole town fought, Daryl had that brilliant idea to set the lake on fire, everyone rallied, and Alexandria was saved! No main characters died!

Also that Wolf? Who went back for Denise? And protected her? Omg. That was everything. And that scene where she was like "maybe you just needed a doctor, but maybe you changed/" and his face was all, "and the Wolf's heart grew three sizes that day!" It was so great

...of course Carol killed him, but still. It was nice. He died protecting her. Father Gabriel also completed his redemption arc (which I thought meant he was gonna die, but like I said No mains died in the premiere!).

It's nice to have nice things happen sometimes.

From LP's summary I believe you, Kaiolino. That mid season premier is classic ratings bait for bullshit tragedy to ensue for the rest of the season.

Nice things don't usually happen to the characters because the writers want to be nice to the characters. They do that to set up "tragedy porn" as Kaiolino calls it. It's the same stupid shit I had to deal with while watching The 100 season 2.

Very few contemporary shows know how to properly write a cohesive, well structured narrative for their television show. Instead, it's easier to just have the characters act like narcissistic sociopaths, who occasionally are nice, and then have traumatic, horrible things happen to them to shock or elicit some kind of instinctual sympathy reaction from the audience.

It's why I haven't found a new TV program to become attached to.

Oh hell no.

GoT is a world where everyone is a monster, hopes and dreams are trampled, and the damn sun never shines. Plus the rolling conveyor belt of sexual assault, and showrunners who wait, panting like wolf from the Tex Avery cartoons for their cast members to turn 18 so they can rape them too. Even the consensual sex in GoT is rape! The showrunners literally don't know the difference. It's a show where nameless children are raped by nameless characters, and it's entirely a background event where no one comments on it.

To date, no has been raped on The Walking Dead even that big scene from the comics where the Governor rapes Michonne didn't happen. He only threatened Maggie, and she was like "fuck you, do whatever you need to do" and he backed off." And that's one of the worst villains on the show so far! I repeat, a whole cast full of female characters who frequently encounter groups of violent baddies, and there is no ever-present threat of sexual assault!

The main cast of the Walking Dead are good people who are trying to make it in a dangerous world, and they survive by relying on each other. They're a family. It's a show about people trying to survive and maintaining their humanity, and ability to trust, and hope, and love. There are so many arcs/character beats where the moral is 'we can't let the horror around us turn us into monsters.' People push through their hurt and despair and make something meaningful with their lives.

The main cast of GoT survive by fucking someone else over before they get fucked over themselves. Kindness is never rewarded. Neither is loyalty, compassion, generosity, none of it. The narrative repeatedly reinforces that the only way to survive is by being as cutthroat as humanly possible. It's a disgusting universe, and I swear to god 80% of the horrors on screen are for titillation. At least when bad things happen in The Walking Dead, they have the decency to play sad music. Tragedies are given the emotional beats they deserve, and they aren't used for shock value (...as frequently. Nobody's perfect...)

TWD is no masterpiece. But it's an improvement over its grim and violent source material. Can GoT say the same? (No, it can't, because that show is fucking miserable.)

As long as he's not making money off it now, DisMarvel doesn't care. It's free advertising for their characters and falls under their usual Marvel fanworks policy.

That's the problem with the television adaptation of TWD. The comics are written like GoT. I don't know what this show wants to be. The changes in the show adaptation are either arbitrary or deliberately manufacture tragedy with bunk scripting and stupid writing.

I'm pretty disappointed.

Stanley Nelson also made "Jonestown: The Life & Death of People’s Temple " which is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. It's so well made, but the obviously horrific to watch. He does not shy away from tough subjects and deals with it in a brutally honest way,

I did a paper on The Black Panthers in college. Despite their militant stance in race relations they were very involved in improving and bettering the lives of the black community.

They receive way too much shit from conservative white people.

Besides working to improve ghetto housing conditions, the Black Panthers made public education more available to children unable to go to schools by using community centers as makeshift schools. Yes they followed doctrines espoused by Mao Tse Dong, but they definitely were more of a positive impact on the black community, in my opinion.

Edit to add: The Black Panthers are the furthest thing from the KKK. Assaults on white people were completely justified, but always demonized by the media.

Posted by: Beezzi Feb 17 2016, 09:38 AM
I'll admit, I don't know enough about the Black Panthers as an organisation. They're only briefly mentioned in SA schools (post aparheid) when compared to the original ANC.

Having been in both the SA and UK education system - I can honestly say that how foreign post-industrial history is taught in schools is kinda sad.

That's why I hope this doc will get on Netflix - a lot of PBS programming does.

It was a travesty on Win8, and now that Win10 has rolled around, ComiXology has since abandoned their app and now I have to use the web viewer to read comics.

Both systems, however, have wonderful apps for reading SDA'd comics. Long story short it makes me sad that other than the guided view, that the reading experience is 10x better on my pirated shit than the stuff I pay for to halfheartedly try to support.

So far it's an ongoing. He's written around enough issues to collect in a second volume. He is adhering to a similar schedule to BKV and Fiona Staples on Saga, write an arc then take a break.

I'm pretty sure there will be a third volume. Since this is a creator owned work, Ellis will keep it going as long as he cares for.

I myself am trade waiting, and since they aren't too pricey I would recommend picking up the trade paperbacks. I buy them on Amazon.

Is anyone watching American Crime Story? It is very excellent. It's also very topical.

Actual started the series tonight and finished episode 3. (I know right? Shocking, isn't it? I'm watching something current!) I'm getting into to it - it's pretty good. It's such a big culture event from my childhood...I had to. Logged so many CNN hours to watch it.

I'm actually surprised how topical they're making it. They're totally drawing comparisons with the LA cops reputation for Kill First, Ask Questions later. Perfect show for the current climate. (The K-kids are a bit much, but I get why.) I'm interested to see how they balance the plot in the future. I feel like they're leaning towards the general opinion when it comes to what really happened.

And, I don't normally like him, but poor David Schwimmer is giving this his all. I'm not buying Selma Blair's acting though.

Btw, does John Travolta's botox person count as a special guest star?

Why are we not singing the X-Praises that is the glory of Deadpool and Cable: SPlit Second?

It was an amazing story.

Just glanced at Brevoort's tumblr for the first time in awhile. This big fat lie sandwhich in particular gave me a chuckle:

"They tried plenty with Monica, and it didn’t take, also, we’re not trying to create a Marvel Wonder Woman, we’d rather have a character who would actually sell. Carol is doing just fine in that regard."

Brevoort is a funny, funny, funny man. Tumblr would be so cold without his light...

@G: I have no idea what comes out when until someone says something, but thanks for the heads up.

In the forum descriptions under X-Books I suggest "X-Factor" be changed to "X-Force" or "Generation X" and "Brian Wood" be changed to "Mike Carey" or "Si Spurrier". :3

Kurt Russel in GoG?

Hopefully as Snake Plissken: "I don't give a fuck about your infinity stones...or your raccoon."

I hate that I replaced my iPad with a Surface for work and hobby reasons (a decision I still stand by). Because the comiXology app on the iPad was great.

That sucks. You're best option seems to be to pirate the stuff you buy as well. Such a bloody hassle tough

How's the Surface otherwise for work and stuff? Your happy with it? I don't really see them in the wild, but the concept seemed interesting when it launched.

It's great. Does absolutely everything I would need it to do for work and all in the size of something smaller than a sheet of paper. The overpriced typepad keyboard is great feeling and easy to use, even for someone more accustomed to full size desktop keyboards. I spend most of my time browsing social media, watching videos etc through this. Rarely ever go to the desktop at home unless it truly calls for it. Having Windows 10 is slick too. Operates well under tablet or laptop style conditions.

And I'm riding on the Surface 3 with 4gb RAM and 128gb hd.

Way too much information guys - after that I can never look at Peter Quill in the same way again. Thanks guys.

It did remind me haven't watched Big Trouble in Little China in ages. I have an open evening and the bluray. Wonder if there's popcorn in the house...

I thought of starting it for Sanford Greene. Now I def will.

I'll need to know the creators on the titles and see some covers/solicits but the lowered price point may have me intrigued by DC Rebirth. We'll see.
